What Do You Want ?

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

I have been thinking about desires and intentions lately and it has reminded me of an old joke I once heard.

“Why do adults always ask kids what they want to be when they grow up?”

“Because they are looking for ideas.”

I never said it was a very funny joke…

It does however make me wonder, “How many of us cannot answer that simple questions?”

Have you ever taken the time to think about what you really want?

And I don’t mean what you think you can get or what other people tell you to do or what you should want.

I mean what do YOU really want?

Can you give a simple easy to understand answer to that question? An answer even a 6-year-old child would understand.

Something so clear you can see it in your minds eye. Something so clear you could instantly know when you got it.

It is funny that when you ask a child the question “what do you want to be when you grow up” they give you a very straightforward and easy to understand answer. The answer would be almost impossible to misunderstand or fail to notice when it happened.

It is only after we “well meaning adults” “explain” to these children why they “can’t” do what they want to do that the answers tend to get less clear.

Why do we do that?

Do we get some sick pleasure from crushing childhood dreams?

I mean do you really know 100% that a radioactive, genetically altered Spider won’t bite this kid who wants to be Spiderman when He grows and give Him super Spider powers?

Now as an adult I would say the odds of that happening are pretty slim but who knows what can happen in the future.

Also who’s to say that child’s desire to be Spiderman doesn’t cause them to study acting and actually get a chance to “be” Spiderman in a movie or TV or even a play?

The only thing we can be pretty certain of is if that child believes us when we say He can’t do that He will never even try.

Now maybe someone would say that was a good thing…

Maybe they would say people need to know their limitations.

I would say it is time to stop thinking that way…

It is the people that pay no attention to the negativity and just go out and do it we should be like. There are many examples of things people thought could never be done until someone went out and did them.

So maybe it is time to dust off some of your dreams…

Maybe it is time for you to think about what you really want…

Don’t worry about how you will do it just yet. You need to start with what you want to do and why you want to do it before you even get to the whole question of how you will do it.

Once you have decided what you really want sit down with a pen and paper and write out what you want.

Be as clear and as specific as possible don’t leave anything vague or unclear. For example if you want to lose weight then don’t say, “I want to lose weight”. Instead pick a weight you want to be and then say, ” I will weigh XXX”. Also pick a deadline, choose a date you want to have this goal completed by don’t leave things to chance.

Write it all down and then review your list every day as a reminder. Your mind will start working on ways to get what you want and before you know it you will have a way to go and get what you want.

It’s never too late to start getting what you want.

If you take the first step today…

You will see the next step tomorrow.
